Noche de Ciencias
SHPE is dedicated to developing a bright future for Hispanics in STEM. To do this, we are working throughout the nation to inspire Hispanic youth to pursue STEM degrees and careers. Our signature program, Noche de Ciencias, uses the spirit of the full SHPE Familia to illuminate the countless possibilities in STEM for local K-12 students.
Noche de Ciencias events accomplish an enormous amount. We provide an opportunity for Hispanic youth to engage with SHPE student and professional role models while participating in a fun, hands-on STEM activity. We offer bilingual workshops for parents, covering crucial information for their child’s success in STEM, including topics like college options, financial aid, and strategies to prepare for higher education. Parents and students alike interact with SHPE members to get honest answers about the opportunities that lie within STEM.
DURING THE 2017-2018 ACADEMIC YEAR, NEARLY 3,000 HISPANIC YOUTH PARTICIPATED IN THESE EVENTS, AND MORE THAN 700 PARENTS RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURSUITS IN STEM.
The success of Noche de Ciencias is clear: During the 2017-18 academic year, nearly 3,000 Hispanic youth participated in these events, and more than 700 parents received information about academic and professional pursuits in STEM. We are making real gains for college readiness and Hispanic youths’ pursuit of STEM, strengthening not just the future of the SHPE Familia, but the future of the American workforce.
